Certified Organic
We are dedicated to providing delightful handmade meals and treats using fresh, local and organic ingredients. As certified organic growers, we are part of a network of Islanders working together to strengthen the production and distribution of great-tasting locally grown organic foods. We are members of the Maritime Certified Organic Growers (MCOG) and PEI Certified Organic Co-Op.
What is ‘certified’ organic? Certified organic is the only way to assure your food was produced with integrity. Certified organic means that the seeds used are not genetically modified, livestock are raised humanely and that the food you eat is real food—no artificial additives, colouring or preservatives. Growers must be approved by a third-party body to label their products certified organic and must:
- Follow a regulated set of standards
- Pass a yearly inspection by a trained independent inspector
- Maintain a detailed audit trail of the operation
What does Historic Maplethorpe produce? We produce organic eggs, chicken and turkey; raspberries; herbs; and a variety of garden vegetables.
In response to demand, local grocery stores are also stocking a larger variety of organic supplies such as flour, cocoa, and pasta products. We also use the Internet as necessary to supply ingredients (such as spices, teas and dried herbs) from organic sources. |
